Alyssa
and Her Gadgets
It was Sunday morning, the sound of rain
hitting the window woke Alyssa up from her sleep. Checking her phone, she
realized that it was only 6 a.m. and decided to go back to sleep. Just when she
was about to close her eyes, she heard her mother yell at her from downstairs,
“Ally, get out of bed and help me make breakfast!” She reluctantly got out of
her bedroom and headed towards the kitchen where her mother was attempting to
make some pancakes. “You know you’re gonna burn them if you let them sit in the
pan for too long, right?” she asked her mother. “Instead of telling me what’s
wrong with my cooking why don’t you come over here and help,” her mother
replied. “It’s 6 a.m. on a Sunday, can you please let me sleep in for once?”
Alyssa complained. “Waking up in the morning wouldn’t be so bad if you hadn’t
stayed up until 2 a.m. like you did last night. What were you doing anyway?”
Alyssa felt annoyed by her mother’s constant lecture about her sleeping
schedule and replied, “I stayed up because I was playing games on my laptop,
okay” and with that, she went back upstairs to sleep.
When she woke up a couple of hours later,
she felt hungry and went downstairs to get some breakfast. To her surprise, she
found both of her parents sitting in the living room with her test results from
the week before. “Why didn’t you tell us you failed English and Science?”
“Because I knew you’d get mad, duh,” Alyssa retorted. “You know if you keep
this attitude up I’m gonna take your phone and laptop away,” her father said,
“But that’s not fair, I need both of them to do my school works,” she cried.
“No, what you need is a time out from all this technology. Now finish your
breakfast and go to your room, you’re grounded.” After hearing this, she
stomped off angrily back to her room and didn’t come out.
A few hours later had gone by and Alyssa
felt really bored. She had nothing to do without her phone and laptop. She
decided to look at some old books she used to love displayed on the shelf next
to her bed. Alyssa found an old novel that her parents gave to her when she was
10. The pages were worn out and the cover was ripped at the edge. Alyssa felt a
sense of fondness rush through her. Memories of her mother reading bits of the
story to her every night before bed flashed in her mind. She realized that the
old novel was the book that started her love for reading before she got
addicted to her phone. A voice pulled her out of her thoughts, “Well that’s a
book I haven’t seen in a long time,” Alyssa was so caught up in her own thoughts that she didn’t
notice her mother standing in the doorway in front of her. “Oh hey, Mom, I was
just going through my old stuff,” she said. Her mom went to sit with her on the
floor to look at the book together. “For the record, I’m sorry. I got so
addicted and became attached to my phone and laptop I neglected my
responsibilities,” Alyssa apologized to her mother. Her mother laughed and gave
her a hug. “That’s alright. Just be careful next time. Now are you hungry? I
made lunch,” her mom said. Alyssa smiled and went downstairs with her mother.
She learnt her lesson and promised to never get addicted to her phone ever
again. Since then, Alyssa made sure to divide her time equally and fix her
grades.
